New Europe with Stronger Ties

Istanbul, 23-29.09.2013

The first and the most demanding working meeting of the project NEST has already finished. It basically means that the time has come to knuckle down to work because there is a 2-year programme full of challenges and unexpected events ahead of us. However, before we all plunge into project activities, let us give you a detailed report on what was actually happening...
The 7-nation summit meeting was held in Istanbul, Turkey from 23 to 29 September 2013 and each country was represented by two delegates: Greece, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Spain and the host of the meeting - Turkey. Late at night, after an all-day trip, when all partners finally reached the destination, we gathered to meet each other. On 24 September, we set off for school where we watched welcome music performances, met school staff and had an opening conference. At that time, we itemized up and coming activities, divided responsibilities and duties and we established a schedule of meeting times and places. We probably wouldn’t complete the tasks unless the traditional Turkish delicacies and dainties served for lunch which made us feel at home. The conference was graced by the presence of school authorities and inspectorate.
On Wednesday, our diligent group paid another visit to school. This time each partner presented a profile of their country, town and school showing pictures or videos. Comenius team had also a chance to visit every nook and cranny of the school and its grounds. All of us could see classrooms and observe how classes are conducted. We were walking around making small talk with students and teachers, socializing and learning about Turkey. The teachers prepared many artistic attractions such as painting on water (art technique called EBRU) or fashion show and we could put on traditional Turkish clothes: fez (a round red hat), caftan etc.
September 26. We spent that day together with Turkish teachers, students and their parents on a school trip. Although the topic of the sight-seeing tour was primarily attuned to students’ educational level, it was also a great history lesson for foreigners. We visited Panorama Tarihi Muzesi, Basilica Cistern and Miniaturk - a park with Turkish landmarks in miniature. Following days also passed on visiting famous places Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque. Such trips were interspersed with slide shows, presentations and heated talks and debates about project activities, expected outcomes and results.
